How to apply a vinyl decal to a car window

Every Carried Co. decal ships with a squeegee and written instructions, and the process takes about fifteen unhurried minutes. This is the long version — the same steps, with the little details that make the difference between a decal that looks installed and one that looks like it grew there.

   Pick your spot — and check the weather

   Rear windows and back glass are the classic placement for a memorial decal. Apply between roughly 50°F and 90°F: adhesive gets brittle in the cold and too aggressive in high heat. Park in the shade, and if the glass has been in the sun, let it cool until it's comfortable to rest your hand on.

   Clean the glass properly

   Wipe the area with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on a lint-free cloth or paper towel, then let it dry completely. Skip glass cleaners like Windex — most leave a residue that keeps vinyl from bonding. Dust, pollen, and wax are the number-one cause of decals lifting at the edges later.

   Position before you peel

   With the backing still on, hold the decal where you want it and step back to check that it's level and centered. Two small pieces of masking tape along the top edge make a hinge, so the decal can swing down into exactly the same spot after you remove the backing.

   Peel the paper backing

   Peel slowly, at a sharp angle, keeping the decal stuck to the clear transfer tape on the front. If part of the design starts coming up with the backing, lay it back down and rub over that spot through the tape, then try again. Take your time here — this step is where rushing costs the most.

   Smooth from the center outward

   Lower the decal onto the glass and, using the included squeegee (a credit card wrapped in a sock works too), press from the center out toward the edges with firm, overlapping strokes. Working outward pushes air ahead of the vinyl instead of trapping it underneath.

   Remove the transfer tape

   Pull the clear tape back slowly against itself at a sharp angle — folded back nearly flat, not straight up. If any part of the design lifts, stop, lay the tape back down, burnish that area again, and continue. Slower is always safer.

   Let it cure

   Leave the decal undisturbed for 24 hours, and avoid car washes (especially high-pressure ones) for the first week. After that, the adhesive is fully set and the vinyl is rated for years of sun, rain, and washing.

If something goes wrong

A small air bubble

Press it toward the nearest edge with the squeegee. If it won't move, prick it with a pin and press flat — the hole disappears into the vinyl.

The decal went on crooked

Within the first few minutes on glass, you can sometimes lift small decals slowly and reposition once. If it tears or stretches, contact us — if we made a mistake, the remake is free, and even if the install went wrong we'll work something out.

Edges lifting after a few days

Almost always a cleaning issue — wax or residue under the edge. Press the edge down firmly; a hair dryer on low for a few seconds softens the adhesive and helps it re-bond.
